Dear Neighbor,
This is my second in a series of advanced notices on what current Democrat Leadership is aiming to pass on the House Floor later this Spring:
Use Your Tax Dollars to Help Fund Planned Parenthood
Over the last 40 years in Michigan, approximately 1.2 million children in their mother’s womb have been deprived of the opportunity to live - approximately 12 percent of the state’s total population.
Also, according to Christian Post, this barbaric practice is by far the number one cause of death worldwide, with 44.6 million casualties annually.1
Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, and other states have enacted common sense measures to protect vulnerable children. On the other hand, Planned Parenthood has worked with lawmakers in Lansing to repeal many restrictions on terminating the lives of unborn children. Last year, Gretchen Whitmer signed HB4949-4959, which repealed partial birth abortion bans, removed requirements for screening for coercion, repealed requirements for informed consent, removed standards for humane disposal of fetal remains, and more.
This year, she proposed $26.6 million in the 2024-2025 state budget for “family planning” services, including “reproductive health care.”2 Planned Parenthood has deceptively named itself as an organization that helps people with “family planning.”
Planned Parenthood has a 208:1 abortion to adoption ratio.
This could lead to millions of dollars in grants to businesses that profit off the horrific and violent practice of dismemberment of babies in their mother’s womb. As your State Representative, I believe no taxpayer should be forced to fund this, especially if it goes against their religious beliefs.
According to Planned Parenthood’s 2021 annual report, this practice brought in $1.7 billion in revenue.3 The organization received $670.4 million in taxpayer funds as well. Furthermore, approximately 40 percent of the organization’s funding came from taxpayer funds from 2014-2015.4 It's not right to use public funds to give money to a scandal-ridden industry that profits off terminating lives of children in their mother’s womb.
Instead, we must do everything we can to treat vulnerable children with dignity and respect. I support legal protections for babies while they’re in their mother’s womb.
A lot of Americans have abortions even though there is a great reluctance to do so. Many would decide not to go through with the procedure if there was greater support for bearing or raising a child. Also, there must be support for women facing crisis pregnancies. Michigan’s future will be one where women are supported for bearing children in difficult circumstances.
I look forward to sharing more with you next week. Happy Easter! Christ is risen!
God Bless You,
Representative Joshua Schriver
For the sake of transparency and accountability, I am one of only 8 out of 110 State Representatives in Michigan to report every single vote I make with a reason for each vote in 2024. You can find my most recent votes/reasons below and a link to all my votes/reasons at the very bottom.
Votes and Reasons (Week of March 22, 2024)
HB 5378- Fix Weight Requirements for Certain Trucks to Receive Fuel Tax Benefit
NO- This policy allows a few more trucks to receive this benefit, but either everyone or no one should be eligible to receive this benefit. If Michigan wants to be competitive in this industry, we should repeal the gas tax. Michigan has the 6th highest gas tax in the nation.
PASSED 98-5
HB 5379- Expand Fuel Tax Reciprocity Distance for Logging Trucks by 20 Miles
NO- There should be no tax reciprocity distance whatsoever. This tax benefit should apply to all or none. If a driver wants to escape Michigan’s high gas prices (6th highest gas tax in the nation) to get gas in another state within America’s border, then they must be free to do so without consequence.
FAILED 53-45
HB 4927- Establish May as “Chaldean and Assyrian Heritage Month”
NO- “Chaldean-American Month” already exists in Michigan.
FAILED 53-44
HB 5527/5528- Mandate Plan/Training for First Aid, AED & CPR for High School Athletic Coaches and Prohibit Hiring Unless Training is Complete
NO- Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) recommends, but does not require that every workplace include one or more employee trained in First Aid, AED and CPR. If anything, local school boards or the schools themselves should make the decision of what is required for their schools and their school athletic coaches in the best interest of the students they serve.
5527 PASSED 55-29, 5528 PASSED 55/41
