Town Hall to Discuss State and Local Road Improvement
This week, I joined law enforcement officers, MDOT officials, law enforcement officers, government officials and constituents in a Town Hall to share encouraging developments to address M-53 road safety in Washington Township. A recent car crash caused significant property damage and brought long-standing safety concerns into sharp focus. I’m grateful to everyone who came out to share their experiences and ideas for solving the problem.
I was met with grateful responses after relaying good news regarding my ongoing efforts to secure infrastructure funding to address specific safety issues on M-53. My budget allotment includes adequate funds to install guardrails and implement other traffic safety measures as deemed appropriate by transportation experts. I am confident that we will achieve these tangible, long-term solutions to significantly reduce the risk of tragedy on M-53.
Moreover, I appreciate the enthusiastic support expressed by local officials and constituents as I detailed solutions within my bill, HB 4597, to restore local control over speed limits on local roads.
Right now, if a local municipality wants to reduce a speed limit, for example, they must defer to the Michigan State Police who use a road study to determine the best speed limit. In most of these cases, the results of these algorithm-based studies cause an unintended consequence of the speed limit getting raised even if the will of local residents is to lower a given speed limit.
With my bill, HB 4597, local municipalities would be given the option to work with local residents and local law enforcement to enact local road speed limit changes without having to defer to a state-level algorithm that usually results in the opposite of locally desired outcomes. This bill is supported locally and statewide with many Republican and Democrat State Representatives across the State of Michigan signing onto my bill as co-sponsors.
If you, too, support this meaningful change, then you can click here to contact members of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure to request a public hearing and passage of HB 4597 to restore local control over our local roads.
